Satan - Live In The Act (Dynamo Club 1983)

Been checking out more of Satan, one of the bands that caught my eye enough during HELLFEST 2014 for me to spend my time digging out more about them and discovering more stuffs.

This is a another live album from them called Live In The Act from 1983. Recorded in Dynamo Club Holland.

Seems this live tape was lost after they recorded in at the club and discovered again in 2003 and so we got this CD.

so....... I just keep my comments to a minimum except for a few things for this post.

- Steve Ramsey plays with 3 broken fingers during this live show. Its announced during the show, and the inlet notes is quite fascinating on this.

Like I mentioned in the previous Satan posting, Steve Ramsey is also a member with Skyclad which also plays at HELLFEST 2014 (and Satan bassist is also Skyclad bassist).

- Continuing the musical chair, Satan performed Blitzkrieg on this live album, and yes, its the same song that Metallica covered. Satan's singer is also the Blitzkrieg singer.

- Pull The Trigger switched to the Deep Purplish Ian Gillan/Ritchie Blackmore style vocal/guitar duel.

- The performance notes of this album inlet makes interesting and funny read.

- Some of the songs on this album was not released yet then, so its nice to hear them introducing their new upcoming songs and the reaction from the crowd. The crowd is amazing from what I hear. 

- 13 live songs from that night, and two songs tagged at the end from their 1982 single.

It must have been mind boggling for those who seen them during the early days..

I think they are advanced of their time... I mean the band members that made up NWOBHM SATAN.

This is a simply a fascinating live album from that period.

SATAN - 'Trial Of Fire' Live In North America

Lets talk cock in the Malay language first, and then ending it with a brief reflection in English..

Korang pembaca semua, Sebelum ada Moral Policia nak melahar aku, jangan la.
OK je tau si SATAN yang ini, korang kena paham agaknya tahun2 akhir 70an dulu nak kasi nama band mesti yang nampak rok, kecoh dan tarik perhatian ye tak? 

Satan ni sebuah band NWOBHM (new wave of british heavy metal) dari Newcastle England, yang ditubuhkan tahun 1979 dulu. Dari memula dorang demo tape, hingga dari Zaman ke zaman kini dorang ada buat berapa album, tukar anggota dan jugak tukar2 nama band kepada macam Blind Fury dan Pariah. Salah sorang gitaris dorang (yang berambut pendek) dan bassist dorang jugak ialah anggota kumpulan SKYCLAD. 

Kebetulan pada Hellfest 2014 lepas, Satan dan Skyclad dua2 main, Satan pada hari pertama di Main Stage 1 (pentas yang sama kumpulan Iron Maiden akan gunakan waktu petangnya untuk headline Hellfest 2014 hari pertama), manakala Skyclad hari kedua pentas Temple. Aku ni pernah dengar nama band, terutama Skyclad ni dari dulu pasal baca pasal dorang kat majalah2 rock lama pasal Skyclad yang jadi pelopor Folk Metal la apa la... Satan pulak memang apabila nama dorang diumumkan untuk Hellfest, kira macam kecoh jugak internet pasal seperti satu kumpulan Legend nak main gitu, antara ‘must see legendary band for Hellfest 2014” gitu.... Aku pun dah pilih nak tengok ni dua band main kat jadual waktu Hellfest yang tersangat padat, tak masuk akal pertembungan jadual clashes of the bands dia, dan sangat giler babi menyusahkan orang betul timetable waktu yang disusun organasasi Hellfest tu. Tapi aku rasa aku tak pernah la tengok mana2 senarai mana2 Festival yang band2 yang ambik bahagian sebest giler macam Hellfest 2014, tu antara sebab musabab aku paksa diri aku pergi backpack sana menyusahkan diri pasal dalam hati aku cakap, ni betul2 nye Dream Come True nye line-up band2 untuk tiga hari tiga malam nye festival.

(Walaupun kalau aku boleh Back To The Future, aku nak pergi tengok Monsters Of Rock Donington Park 1988, tu memang paling dahsyat 6 band paling terbaik satu hari satu festival satu pentas aje, walaupun dua orang penonton mati masa GNR tengah main, ramai cedera, dan headliners festival hari itu Iron Maiden cuma diberitahu pasal malapetaka ni lepas dorang abis persembahan dorang depan 107,000 peminat dorang).

Korang bayangkan la, punya aku teruja nak menengok Satan main, aku tak abiskan tengok IMPIETY main kat pentas Temple Hellfest. Impiety sebelum main last song gitu aku dah terus ngan lincah pergi stage 1, jauh jugak la menapak ke sana ke sini. 
Aku tak mau miss nak tengok Satan dari mula sampai abis. Kira mentaliti aku fikir cam gini , "mungkin ni satu kali dalam hidup aku dapat peluang menengok Satan main". Line-up mereka sekarang ni pun memang anggota asli dari album Court In The Act tahun 1983.
Bila Satan start main, dah la siang hari pertama masih awal, semua hadirin pun rasanya masih keadaan warm-up lagik, wahhh tersangat lah heavy metal si Satan ni, aku suka gitaris rambut panjang dia "suka tengok main kali pertama gitu" hahaa.. Cek nama cek nama...Ohhh nama dia Russ Tippins. Penyanyi dia Brian Ross (jugak penyanyi kumpulan NWOBHM Blitzkrieg) pandai control keadaan, pandai berbual, suara sedap dan memang rock abis, band ni memang sangat berpengalaman gitu dan menyerlah persembahan mereka walhal ni la pertama kali dalam sejarah mereka bermain di negara Perachis., tapi apa paling mengejut beruk kan aku ialah ni band NWOBHM tapi dia punya thrash dan laju memang dah tahap thrash dan laju nak mampos!! Pada aku dorang ada sikit advance sikit, kalau nak fikirkan keadaan zaman tu kot? Macam kira macam tercengang ibarat “this is simply awesome!!” Aku rasa bukan aku sorang la rasa macam dorang best main live ngan lagu2 yang gerek dan advance untuk zaman NWOBHM..


Aku nye paling complement aku boleh cakap masa tengok Satan main kat stage 1 Hellfest ni ialah,-> masa dorang start main, ramai orang rasa curious, nak ambik tahu, bila lepas 5-10 minit gitu, rasa dorang dah menang seluruh penonton yang hadir tengok dorang main.., boleh rasa tekanan tau semua dah tolak kedepan, dari belakang boleh rasa semua maju dan kasi pressure kat penonton2 kat depan, lepas 15 minit dah dengar semua ramai2 chant “SATAN! SATAN! SATAN!!”, so memang Satan memang hebat la lagu demi lagu, dan bila show nak abis penyanyi cakap “ ok our last song “, kuat punya BOOO!!!!, dan bila dorang abis main last song...dia punye chants “SATAN! SATAN! SATAN!!” kuat giler, macam band headliners besar2 yang belah malam je chants ramai2...

Ni CD live terbaru dorang, baru keluar la... aku pre-order sebenarnye...
Ni pun rakaman dorang pertama kali jugak jejak kaki dan main kat Amerika Syarikat dan Canada... Bulan April tahun ni 2014 jugak. 
Jadi memang agaknya dorang dari dari dulu tu tak travel mana2, ni baru agaknya dorang dapat peluang main merata tempat... Aku rasa dorang memang boleh pukul abis la kat sapa2 yang ambik tahu atau tak tahu tapi tiba2 tengok dorang main live... Aku tengok foto2 dorang main kat club kat Jepun baru ni je, memang teruja...dan kat Amerika pun dorang main club2 kecik je, club takde backstage pun, keluar terus pintu diri luar nye jenis, tapi sambutan semua hebat... untuk sapa yang tahu pasal ni band atau nak ambik tahu...
Skyclad lak, memang... gerek nak mampos jugak, ada band member pompuan ok, tukang main violin dan keyboards. Dahsyat...  

Songs Breakdown 
six songs - Trial By Fire, Blade Of Steel, Break Free, No Turning Back , Ritual , Alone In The Dork is from the Court In The Act album of 1983.
six songs - Time To Die , Twenty Twenty Five , Siege Mentality, Incantations, Testimony, Cenotaph is from the Life Sentence album of 2013.
three songs - Opression, Heads Will Roll, Kiss Of Death already appeared from their first early demos about 81/82.

At the start of this cd, you can hear an introduction about the band playing their very very first show in North America ever.. This cd is a very nice cd for me, and its really a value for money with 15 songs and good packaging.

Watching Satan's performance at Hellfest 2014 is one of the most exciting discoveries of a legendary band. I think after more than 20 years, its time for the whole world to discover about Satan, the band.
Also, Their rare old albums are being sold at a bit higher prices on EBAY it seems...
Its the first time for them in France, and to play Hellfest Stage 1, and to have Iron Maiden headlining it later that evening must have been a good expose for them and they deserve it.

My own experience is that I can feel the crowd at Stage 1 surge forward and giving pressure to those in front as Satan was playing song after song. By half-way point you can hear "Satan! Satan!" chants, and there were loud jeers and dissapointments when its time for Satan to play their last song. The ending Satan! Satan! Satan! chants by the crowd was a very very very loud one. I think Satan really wins the crowd with their performance and songs that afternoon. I am pleasantly surprised by their songs, their performance, stage control and their speed and thrashness. I became a fan right there and then.

Anyway, I choose to catch Skyclad on the second day, which features Steve Ramsey and Graeme English from Satan. Skyclad is also amazingly entertaining band with very nice music too.
